Snowed In.

Jack saw his first snow, as we all know - but who would have thought it could have kept us from celebrating Christmas with the entire family. A huge winter storm brought in ice, snow and dangerous roads right smack dab in the middle of Christmas. Considering the luck of the family recently, the smartest decision was to stay put. Especially since the 'winter' vehicle was totaled out from dad's accident.

First time in 29 years that we didn't spend Christmas with the family. The time before that, was because yours truly was on her way. :)

Jack definitely got a little cabin fever with the rest of us - But Grampers, Grandma, and Unc definitely kept Jack busy and entertained.

Santa Claus Came To Town ...

& brought Jack a Radio Flyer little push, pull and ride cart! He l.o.v.e.s it. Man, mom is good ...
I mean, Santa.

Ho, Ho, Cheeri-oh!

A Snowy Playdate

Jack and I were able to spend some time with our cousins, Alyson, Matthew and Elizabeth. We had SO much fun. Jack loved watching Matthew and Elizabeth play and they were so great with Baby Jack.

Surprisingly, Jack didn't mind the cold weather! He loved sitting outside - too bad the little stumps of his snowsuit wouldn't let him touch the snow ... He tried so hard to examine it - but nothing good came of that ...

Snowyface makes Jack a sad boy.

Two Mo' Toofers

So I hung Jack upside-down to get sneak peak at what drove us both crazy during my finals... and there they are.

I'd like them to stay where they are at, because I am sure once they drop, my little munchkin won't look like a baby no mo'. :(

Jack Meets Santa

Jack met Santa ... twice. And BOTH times, he was all smiles. Well, the first time he just wanted his crackers, bored by Mr. Claus. But when meeting the REAL Santa (the mall Santa) he was all smiles and claps. Everyone prepared to have him scream and cry ... they wouldn't let Jack sit on his lap until the last minute, camera-ready. They didn't understand the Jack is a Rockstar... no special prep needed. They were all kind of amazed when Jack smiles and clapped; I, of course, wasn't. My favorite part was when we left, he turned around and looked at Santa and smiled so big I could see all his teeth and it made his eyes shut.

A Chistmas Poem

(I did not write this ...)

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love, I would sleep,
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack; brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts,
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light.
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December."
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas Gram always remembers."

"My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures; he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life for my sister or brother,
Who stand at the front against any and all
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "Harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least?
Give you money," I asked, "Or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
for being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
that we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

You Love 'em But Sometimes ....

[Fill in the blank.]

It's the last week of classes - Time to turn everything in. You know ... the kind of week that even if you didn't have a full time job and a baby to raise, all by yourself ... you'd STILL be up all night ... finishing your work.

Jack has been dubbed 'Jack the Ripper' by a classmate. And when he's old enough to understand ... I'll be sure to go in great detail how sick to my stomach I am right now.

A Patriotic Christmas

In 2004, I closed on my first house on Election Day. Go figure. A little American symbolism of my life to come. Lindsay and I celebrated Christmas that year with Nip, the Norfolk Island Pine I got from Kroger the year before for my apartment living. Nip was pre-decorated. (& yes, we named it - that's what we do) That was the same year Bryan came home with me to Minnesota for the Christmas holiday. That was the last time I saw him for months as he left to start training for his tour to Iraq.

2005? Bryan and I were engaged. But we spent Christmas holiday apart, on opposite sides of the world. I went shopping with one of my besties, Ann, for holiday decorations for my 'grown up tree'. Of all the ornaments, sizes and colors - magenta, blue, yellow, orange ... I opted for red and silver - so the tree wouldn't clash with my then, red living room.

The year of the wedding: 2006 First year in our home together celebrating the holidays. We went to a tree farm and cut down our 'first' Christmas Tree and vowed for it to be a family tradition.

We had a hectic 2007 holiday season - With a 'Home for Sale' sign in the front yard, Christmas was the last thing we could think about. After a horrifying battle with food poisoning, Bryan and I missed our 'post-Thanksgiving Christmas decorating extravaganza.' [note: the food poisoning was not from my cooking] Once our strength was regained, we headed across the street for an over-priced pre-cut tree. Boring. But hey - we got a free ornament.

Welcome to Statesboro in 2008 and a precious LBN on the way. To restart the tradition, Bryan and I headed to a tree farm again to cut down our own tree. We drove an hour in a half in cold, wet weather conditions - cut down our tree and headed back. Only to find out there is a tree farm less than a half mile from our house. This Christmas was bittersweet because we all knew Bryan would be leaving for a tour to Afghanistan soon. Real soon.

And here we are in 2009. LBN is here; Jack is a healthy, happy baby boy. I'm so proud to be his mom. The only problem with this Christmas is that Bryan isn't home. Doesn't really feel like much of a holiday season with such a large part of our little family missing. Jack's first Christmas. But, I kept the tradition alive. Robbie came over and we went to the CLOSE tree farm and cut down a tree. It's much larger than it looked in the field.

I pulled out the ornaments, the tree stand and lights from the very back of the attic in our shed. Robbie and I hauled the tree in the house. We (I) picked a tree with a crooked trunk ... so we spent forever in branches and sap trying to get it straight. I wrestled with Christmas lights. I felt lonely decorating the tree by myself, but Jack was asleep at my feet. keeping me company. I hung up all the red and silver filler ornaments I got in 2005. Pretty much over the holiday already.

Then I got to the 'special' ornaments that we've received from friends and family over the years (Not the ones we get free from roadside tree stands). I started to notice a trend. Maybe I knew better in 2005 and picked the ornaments not to match my living room, but to support the ornaments that would soon symbolize the life that we live.

I took a step back and realized that the Neal's have a Patriotic Christmas Tree. A somber reminder of the sacrifices we all have made. Bryan away from his family in dangerous conditions, Jack growing up in the absence of his father and me? Missing my husband, my partner, my best friend.

A end of the year trophy, our Christmas Tree reminds us that another year has passed, many strengths gained and hardships overcome. And although apart - all 3 of us have much to be thankful for.

We are so wealthy in Life. Freedom. Health. & Love.

O' Christmas Tree!

Jack's Auntie Robbie met us out today to get Jack's 1st Christmas Tree. I think he enjoyed it. Trees definitely look MUCH smaller out on the lot...

Oh, and for you northerners ... the weather is great down here.

Bryan Says Hi!

Tonight I got to talk to Bryan for a record-breaking 9 minutes. It was the most I've talked to him since he went back overseas. That's 10 minutes total, now. The 'bad guys' have been shutting down the cell towers so our guys haven't been able to use their phones.

Bryan said the amenities there are scarce. Since he's been at his new location, they've built two buildings - one for phones, computers, etc. (They currently have no phone/computer banks) ... and put doors on the chow hall - so they can eat without a draft.
So, to be blunt, he can't use phonecards. If you'd like to send him one for Christmas, you can send it here so Jack and I can call his cell phone - better rate and more cost effective. We can also use Skype credits.
He said it's cold ... he's at 7800 feet? I think? I can't remember. Whatever high in the mountains is. He said they had a good Thanksgiving dinner. Nothing like the old camp - but hey, something is better than nothing. He also said he had a white Thanksgiving.

He says hello to everyone and can't wait to come home.

Just a Couple Steps

I have tried numerous times to get some of Jack's steps captured on video. Unfortunately ... he's far too interested in the actual video camera or computer to focus. So here are 2 steps. Record is 4. (as of today)

Happy Thanksgiving

Today, like the rest of the world, I am thankful for moments like these and am especially thankful for the many moments yet to be made.

Bryan feeding Jack during a freezing tailgate.

Hanging out like we were 'kids' again.

Watching the little one celebrate holidays

Having the obnoxious kid in the restaurant ...
& discovering he's most likely going to be a lefty ...

Jack hanging out on the golf cart with his Daddy.

If you haven't gathered ... here are some of the pictures from Bryan's R&R. Jack and I miss his daddy very much this holiday season.

9 Months Young...

Jack is 9 months old. That's 3/4 of 12 months. 12 months is 1 year. You get where I am going. But I definitely don't know where the time went. Jack is the happiest big baby ever. He's curious, impatient, loving, perceptive, full-throttle, cuddly, and so much more. But the best part is that he loves to give his mama kisses.

We had a parent/teacher conference last week. I was told that Jack is daring. He's the ring leader of the class. He listens, he's daring, he steals bottles, and brings the teachers his friends pacifiers. He makes sure everyone is happy and is concerned when the little girls cry. He makes it a point to hang out with everyone in the room - big or small. And will talk &/or yell at them until they react.

They said he's VERY smart... so for those of you who are asking me what Jack wants for Christmas ... 12 month+ toys will do. He's dealing a little with the stranger and separation anxiety. But happy and healthy nonetheless - and that's all that matters.

Well - not QUITE 100% healthy ... Jack got his 1st ear infection this week. So far I've held off from stealing his delicious amoxicillin - don't judge, you think its yummy, too. He's been a trooper but now has amoxicillin-induced diarrhea. TMI? Get over it. I'm the lucky one who gets to change them left and right. :)

9 Months: 20lbs, 10oz & 30" long - 17.75" head

Bryan Update

It's been a long time since I heard from Bryan ... but he was finally able to update me on a little of what he's doing. Currently, he is acting as First Sergeant while the 1SG is on his leave. He said they are in the middle of nowhere on a very small outpost watching over 500 square miles of Afghanistan. He's been very busy going on missions and building thing to improve the lifestyle at his new home, COP Zormat.

Best part of the email is that he gave me an address - just in time to get holiday mailings out the door.

Deadline to Afghanistan - Dec 4, 2009.

Sooooo... Jack and I will be spending our Thanksgiving holiday making his daddy a box that will hopefully cheer him up through the holiday season.
